Indiana Online Sports Betting Regulations

Two online sportsbooks are playable in Indiana (BetRivers and DraftKings), but, as we’ve shown you above, 13 casinos in the State do have the option to apply for sports betting licenses.

So you can reasonably expect many more choices soon.

Legislation for sports betting has recently been passed. There were fears that the possibility of sportsbooks in IN would collapse, with Indiana Sports betting apps a huge point of discussion.

Representative Ben Smaltz was highly vocal in his opposition to mobile betting. Now, those fears have been allayed, with Governor Eric Holcomb signing off Bill 1015 in May. More about online Indiana sports betting apps and general mobile play later.

Let’s take a look at some of the key regulations for sportsbooks in IN.

Tax

A 9.5% tax rate will be imposed on all gross revenue. A part of this amount will be put towards problem gambling organizations.

Fees

Each vendor will have to pay a $10,000 fee for a license. An annual fee of $50,000 for renewal also applies.

Betting Limits

Any or all esports betting and any youth or amateur sports remain illegal.

Other Laws

The Indiana Gambling Commission will have control over live betting limits, along with data restrictions.

From July 1, 2019, operators could apply for sports licenses, both for Indiana online and for retail sportsbooks in Indiana. The date for sports betting in Indiana opened on October 3, 2019.

Anyone partaking in sports betting in Indiana will need to be at least 21 years old. Players will need to prove their identity, regardless of whether they bet at a retail sportsbook or online.

Only licensed casinos can currently apply for a sports betting license. Casinos can either launch their own sportsbook, or partner with an operator who focuses on sports betting.

Online Sports Betting In Indiana

Let’s delve a little further into Indiana online sports betting laws and where you will have the opportunity to bet at retail sites.

Sports betting in IN is now legal. Your sports betting needs can be met at a number of land-based and river-based casinos as well as online and app-based sportsbooks, once relevant licenses have been applied for.

To put it simply, sports betting is now permitted. This includes horse racing and fantasy sports, as well as general sports. There are still some restrictions, though. Esports betting is still prohibited, and you won’t be able to legally place bets on amateur or youth sports, which includes NCAA.

The list below displays the casinos that are welcome to apply for licences to offer sports betting in IN. These casinos can also offer horse racing betting, along with a plethora of casino options.

  • Ameristar
  • Belterra Casino
  • Blue Chip Casino
  • Four Winds South Bend
  • French Lick Resort Casino
  • Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg
  • Hoosier Park
  • Horseshoe Southern Indiana
  • Horseshoe Hammond
  • Indiana Grand Casino
  • Majestic Star
  • Majestic Star II
  • Rising Star Casino Resort
  • Tropicana Evansville

While we’re unsure at this stage which of the above casinos will introduce sportsbooks in IN, we can take an educated guess by looking at who are operating in other States.

We expect Tropicana, Harrah’s Hoosier Park and Hollywood Casino will be amongst the first to apply for licences for sportsbooks in IN. All three have released sportsbooks in other States, for example, they offer Delaware sports betting, and so it’s likely they’ll be keen to expand into IN at the earliest chance.

We can also add French Lick to the list. French Lick have been building their sportsbook since last year, so expect to have sports betting opportunities here soon.

Some of the casinos listed above could join forces with existing operators. FanDuel and DraftKings have launched sportsbooks in other parts of the US, so it’s likely that these two sportsbook providers, in particular, will attempt to move into the market, possibly in conjunction with land-based casinos.

Other possibilities include Caesars, 888, MGM, and FourWinds. We will know more once the date for licence applications opens. We can examine the betting scene in other States, such as New Jersey sports betting or Delaware sports betting, for a good idea of what to expect.

Which Sports Can I Bet On In Indiana?

From what we know from current legislation, the only sports unavailable to bet on are esports and amateur sports. College sports should be an option, but youth games, i.e Under 18 games, are still prohibited.

All major leagues and tournaments will be available to bet on. This list includes the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB, as well as a number of competitions taking place all over the world.

Soccer betting is extremely popular to bet on, particularly European football. Expect to see odds and markets based on England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and the Bundesliga in Germany at the very least.

Tennis and golf have proved popular in other States, so there’s no reason to suspect that these sports won’t be available to residents of Indiana too.

Mobile Betting

While sports betting became a reality in fall 2019, bettors could only choose between a select few apps.

One of the main reasons for the delay were the regulations surrounding mobile betting. The aspect surrounding mobile betting was removed then reinstated late on in proceedings, with some only happy to introduce sportsbooks at retail locations.

Now, though, the Bill has been fully authorized, with mobile betting part of the action.

Indiana Sports Betting Apps

On mobile betting apps from Indiana, bettors will have the opportunity to bet from anywhere within the State.

There’s expected to be plenty of online apps to choose from. Mobile betting has reinvigorated sports entertainment across the globe, offering greater freedom and immediate access to your gambling account, without the need to travel to a retail site.

DraftKings and BetRivers were the first to offer apps in IN. Both of these operators have gained thousands of fans in other States, and they’re doing the same with sports betting in IN.

How To Choose The Best Online Betting Sites In Indiana

So, we think you’ll have plenty of options when it comes to online sports betting in IN. The difficulty will come when you try and decide which sportsbook you should sign up to.

There are a number of aspects you should consider when deciding which are the best sports betting sites for you. We’ve compiled a list of criteria you should look at before you sign up to any of the sports betting sites.

Welcome Bonus

Most sportsbooks provide some form of welcome bonus in order to entice customers into signing up with them. The key aspect of a welcome bonus isn’t necessarily how big it is, i.e, how much in bonus funds/site credit, but how easy it is to claim.

For example, a welcome bonus could consist of a 100% deposit match up to $500. Sounds attractive, but are there wagering requirements? Odds restrictions? How easy is it to meet these terms? These are important questions to consider.

Each sports betting offer will come with specific terms and conditions. Make sure you read these terms carefully before you sign up and deposit any funds.

Payment Options

The best online betting sites in Indiana will allow you to make deposits and withdrawals via a range of methods. Your options should include, at least, the following:

  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card
  • eWallet
  • Bank Transfer
  • Prepaid Card
  • Customer Card

These methods are readily available in other States, and will be with others where online betting is set to be introduced, such as with Delaware sports betting sites. Note, though, that minimum deposits can apply, along with potential fees.

We recommend that you check with your banking provider if any charges will be made from them. Some banks won’t allow transfers of funds to or from a gambling site, or may apply a fee for doing so.

Customer Service

Customer support will be an aspect that the best online betting sites in Indiana will focus on. Find an operator that allows you easy access to customer service. A 24/7 Live Chat service can be extremely helpful, along with email and telephone communication.

Ease Of Use

It sounds a simple one, but it’s a good idea to sign up to a site that’s easy to navigate through and simple to place bets. The best online betting sites will offer a smooth and seamless betting experience, with an easy-to-use interface.

Most Indiana sports betting operators will allow you to peruse the site before you sign up. It’s a good idea to look around each site before you create your account.

Range Of Betting Markets

Sports betting in Indiana should feature a huge range of sports. We know already that esports and amateur sports betting will remain prohibited, but the best betting sites should have odds on all popular sports.

The variety of sports should include baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey. Soccer betting in other States has also proved incredibly popular. Check that your sport of choice is available to bet on with your operator.

Indiana Online Sports Betting: Conclusion

The future of sports betting in Indiana is looking healthy. Now the final regulations have been passed, we can look forward to a number of operators launching sportsbooks very soon.

This also includes the introduction of online apps. Mobile betting was the major sticking point in passing legislation, but now that has been resolved, residents of the Hoosier State can enjoy a full betting experience, both online and at physical sportsbooks.

Indiana is set to join New Jersey, Nevada, West Virginia, and Delaware sports betting sites to name just three. Expect many other States in the Midwest to join IN in the near future.
