Pegasus World Cup Entries 2021

The Pegasus Cup horse race that took place in 2021 saw Knicks Go (jockeyed by Joel Rosario and trained by Brad H. Cox) lift the trophy. It was a stellar performance by Knicks Go as he proved that he could run with the best and withstand nine furlongs on a racetrack he hadn’t run before.

The victory was as decisive as it was improbable as Knicks Go came to the Pegasus Cup just off a victory at the Breeders Cup mere weeks before. With this win, he also managed a fourth consecutive one-sided win ever since joining up with trainer Brad H. Cox.

Previous Pegasus Horse Races Winners

Pegasus World Cup horse racing started off in 2017, making it one of the younger competitions in the US. The idea proposed for this race was to place it in mid-January so it would not interfere with the Breeders’ Cup or the Dubai World Cup. In fact, it was the perfect timing for this race as things usually go on a bit of a slump during this part of the season.

One has to wait for spring for something significant to happen, and the addition of this race helps things move a lot faster and keeps things exciting. More so, the timing of the race allows for horses to run one last race before retiring to stud.

The event’s original name was Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, but it was replaced and renamed by Pegasus World Cup Turf Stakes in 2019, the name that it holds today. Pegasus World Cup History

The Pegasus World Cup Stakes is a Grade I thoroughbred horse race originally started in 2017. The first event was held on 28th January 2017, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, the place where the event is held till this day. The idea was originally proposed by Frank Stronach for a 10-furlong race but was later shortened to nine furlongs, the length that is kept till today.

The inaugural race came with a purse of $12 million, which surpassed the Dubai World Cup at that point and became the richest race. The first race also transferred the Grade I rating from the discontinued Donn Handicap by the American Graded Stakes Committee. The 2018 event came with an even bigger purse, at $16 million, but the figure was later reduced to $9 million in 2019.

At the same time in 2019, a new event was added, Pegasus Turf, which came with a purse of $7 million. Since 2020, the purse was reduced to $3 million and will be the same for the coming 2023 event. As far as the 2023 Pegasus Turf goes, the purse will be $1 million.

The Pegasus World Cup 2023 location will remain, as it always was, Gulfstream Park. The competition is open to horses of 4 years and older and has been ever since its inception.

Eclipse Award

The Gulfstream Park is known for being the venue where the 49th annual Eclipse Award was presented. The Eclipse Award is widely recognized as a Thoroughbred horse racing award that got its name from the British racehorse and sire, Eclipse.

The Eclipse Award is given to the winner of each division, with the most prestigious award being that for the American Award Horse of the Year. The most recent Horse of the Year Award in 2020 went to Authentic, trained by Bob Baffert. Interestingly, Bob has also won the award with Justify in 2018 and American Pharaoh in 2015.
