History of Virginia Lottery

The Virginia Lottery has an extremely rich history that dates all the way back to the 1980’s. The organization was founded in 1987 after residents of Virginia voted to implement the state’s first ever government-run lottery. In November 2000, locals voted on the matter and it passed in a landslide, officially becoming a permanent part of the state’s constitution. From that point forward, the State Lottery Proceeds Fund would take over, forcing the General Assembly to reinvest all lottery profits into Virginia’s education system.
