New York Online Sports Betting

New York Online Sports Betting has long been the subject of much speculation. For many years, the New York sports gambling market has been eyed by major online sportsbook operators. It seemed that New York online sports betting was unlikely to be a reality.

But the wait is finally over. NY online sportsbooks launched on January 8th at 9 a.m. ET as it was announced by The New York Gaming Commission. Seven sportsbooks that went live include WynnBET, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, Pointsbet, and BetRivers.

It’s also expected that in the future five other operators will join this betting market, but because of the late approval, they will launch their platform later on. These sportsbooks include PointsBet, BetMGM, Resorts World, BallyBet, and WynnBet.

Retail NY sports gambling has been legal at the state’s casinos for a couple of years now, having launched in 2019. However, retail NY sports betting was actually legalized at the state’s casinos in 2013. This was as part of a referendum, the New York Gaming Economic Development Act, that expanded New York gambling. It included the construction of four new commercial casinos.

The first sportsbooks in the state did not open until after the United States Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, which prohibited most sports betting nationwide. And, NY mobile sports betting has been approved by lawmakers and now is finally ready to go live.

BetMGM has already launched in Michigan, Virginia, DC, New Jersey, Nevada, West Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, Colorado, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. The BetMGM Sign up Bonus is Get up to $1,500 Paid Back in Bonus Bets If You Don't Win!

FanDuel first launched its platform in New Jersey in 2018. Afterward, the operator went live in several other states including Michigan, Colorado, Indiana, Arizona, Virginia, Illinois, Tennessee, and Connecticut. The last state to be welcomed into the fold is the state of New York, where FanDuel began operating in January 2023. FanDuel is known for its welcome offers and a variety of betting options like Moneyline wagers, spread bets, in-game bets, and others. Additionally, FanDuel will provide NY bettors with different betting markets like NFL, NBA, and NHL.

DraftKings has been known as the operator that has an all-inclusive platform for fantasy, sports betting, and casino fans alike. And now this brand is live in the state of New York. Not only does DraftKings includes NHL and NBA but it also covers various soccer, rugby, cricket, and other sports betting markets. There are many player prop choices as well as different payment options that the new members can use for deposits and withdrawals.

Caesars Sportsbook has been one of the most popular ones on the US sports betting market. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that this operator is among the first ones to join NY online sports betting. Caesars is an online sportsbook that has a great selection of bonuses, sports betting markets, as well as an app that you can use.

NY bettors can now place different bets on NBA, NFL, NHL, tennis, and other sports betting markets available at BetRivers. Once they complete the registration process, players from New York can explore all the available bonuses, payment options, betting markets, live bets, and more.

Potential Sports Betting Sites

The online sports betting in New York will most likely get five more sportsbooks in the future. These include PointsBet, BetMGM, Resorts World, BallyBet, and WynnBet. Due to late application, these operators will most likely join the NY betting market later on. Nevertheless, these brands will certainly make a fine addition to the NY online betting market once they go live.

  • Barstool Sportsbook – A Barstool New York Sportsbook launch is a real possibility. Currently, the sportsbook is available in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Colorado, Virginia, New Jersey, and Indiana.
  • bet365 – A bet365 New York Sportsbook could be forthcoming from the UK-based operator. It is currently available in New Jersey and is set to launch in Colorado soon as well.
  • Fox Bet – A FOX Bet New York Sportsbook could also potentially come to the state. You can find a FOX Bet Sportsbook in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Colorado at this time.
  • Bally Bet – Bally Bet is already live in Iowa and Colorado and it is likely it will soon launch in New York as well!
  • WynnBET – WynnBET is operating in many US states and NY is potentially another one the brand would be interested in.

For now, PointsBet is live in New Jersey, Iowa, West Virginia, Indiana, Colorado, Michigan, and Illinois. It’s expected that this operator will soon add NY to the list. With a long list of promotions and betting markets like NBA, MLB, NCAAB, and NCAAF, this sportsbook will provide great wagering options for NY players once it goes live.

BetMGM has already launched in Michigan, Virginia, DC, New Jersey, Nevada, West Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, Colorado, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. Once it goes live in New York it will most likely bring some of the best bonuses and betting markets to the table.

We anticipate that Resorts World will include a huge selection of sports and leagues on their platforms. Moreover, this brand will most likely include a welcome offer for all NY players as well as plenty of safe payment options.

For now, BallyBet is live in four states, and we expect New York to become the fifth one really soon. Even though this sportsbook is relatively new to the US online betting market, it has already attracted numerous sports betting fans to their platform.

WynnBet is already live across several states in the US, and it’s expected that it will soon join New York online sports betting market. Once they do, they will most likely welcome NY players with bonus-back bonus promotions and plenty of sports and leagues with the best odds.

Here is a list of some of the more likely mobile New York sportsbooks:

New York Sports Betting Sites

Currently, there are a few options for New York gambling and sports betting. This includes retail commercial casinos that are currently in operation in the state of New York. Moreover, daily fantasy sports and horse race betting are both legal in New York. And now, from January 8th, online betting will finally be another option for NY players.

As mentioned before, NY sports betting was legalized in 2013 at retail casinos. But, it took until the United States Supreme Court overturned PASPA for the wheels to begin turning for a NY sports gambling launch at the casinos.

The first sportsbooks launched at the state’s casinos three years ago in 2019, a year after PASPA was overturned. At this time, just under a dozen casinos in the state are able to operate brick-and-mortar sportsbooks.

New York online gambling has had a harder time gaining support and has faced an uphill battle for many years. Meanwhile, neighboring state New Jersey has poached potential online sports betting revenue with its robust sports betting market.

It was not until 2021 that online sports betting in New York was finally able to find support in the necessary leadership. As we mentioned, legislators in New York voted to legalize mobile sports betting in NY back in April of 2021. And after less than a year of waiting, players in this state will finally be able to place bets with some of the leading operators in the industry.

It’s expected that four operators will start offering their services to NY bettors from January 8th at 9 am ET sharp. These operators are Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers. However, it’s anticipated that the New York sports betting market will get another five operators very soon. PointsBet, BetMGM, Resorts World, BallyBet, and WynnBet were approved in late 2021, so their launch might come a bit later.

New York Sports Betting Bill – Timeline

As was written above, New York online sports betting has seen some progress in the last decade. Sports betting at New York commercial casinos was legalized in 2013. While the first sportsbooks opened at their casinos in 2019, after PASPA was overturned.

New York regulators voted to approve mobile sports betting in NY this year in April 2021. Depending on how long the application process for prospective operators takes, mobile New York sportsbooks could launch this year or early next year in 2023.

January 2021 – New York then-Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his support for NY mobile sports betting. He announced his plan to include mobile sports betting in NY as part of his budget proposal. New York lawmakers began working on the foundational rules for mobile sports betting in New York. Also, the House Racing and Wagering Committee passed A1257.

March 2021 – The annual budget proposal from the New York State Assembly was released. It included mobile sports betting as one of the ways that the state’s government will be able to generate money.

April 2021 – Then-Governor Cuomo won the New York online sports betting debate. This debate pitted a state run-lottery model against a competitive model. The governor signed the state budget into law, making New York online sports betting official. The “monopoly model” was signed into law by NY lawmakers. Under this model, sportsbook operators would need to pay $25 million to obtain a 10-year license. They would also need to pay $5 million for server housing which would take place in one of New York’s four commercial casinos. Sportsbook operators would also be paying up to 50% of their revenues as tax.

July 2021 – The July 1 deadline that had been set to launch bidding for online sportsbooks in the state was missed by the New York State Gaming Commission. Eight days after the deadline, the NYSGC launched the RFA for NY mobile sportsbooks on July 9. The RFA set that all bids were due by August 9 and also broke down the criteria for scoring these bids. The winning licensees do not need to be decided on until early January, however. At the end of the month, the NYSGC posted questions and answers about the RFA from potential sportsbooks and platform providers.

August 2021 – The NYSGC posted its second set of questions and answers about the RFA. Once the August 9 deadline hit, the NYSGC announced a list of the bids that had been received by the deadline. Mid-month, the NYSGC released redacted versions of the six NY mobile sports betting bids it received.

January 2023 – The first four online sportsbooks started operating in NY. The New York Gaming Commission announced on January 6th that Caesers, FandDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers will go live on January 8th.

Sportsbook Welcome Offer Types

Sportsbook welcome offers are pivotal for any sports bettor. Not only can a welcome bonus offer intrigue a customer enough to join a new sportsbook, but more importantly, it can help you gauge whether any sportsbook is right for you.

Below we will review the most common sportsbook welcome offers you’ll see at sportsbooks.

Bonus-Back Bet

A bonus-back bet is just what it sounds like. Bonus-back bets are the most common welcome bonus offer for new users.

Sportsbooks will offer a bonus-back bet up to a certain amount of money. Let’s call it $500. When a sportsbook offers this bonus-back offer for up to $500, users must deposit at least $500 into their sportsbook account. Furthermore, the first wager you make can be up to $500, and they will give a bonus bet if you lose. We will review what a bonus bet is below.

Therefore, if you win your first wager, that’s great. You’re off to a great start with a positive bankroll. If not, the sportsbook has you covered and will ensure you a bonus bet of up to whatever amount of money the sportsbook designates as the maximum for a bonus-back bet.

Please note that the sportsbook will certainly attach specific terms and conditions you must follow to get your bonus-back bet. For example, many sportsbooks won’t allow customers to bet on heavy favorites. Therefore, particular sportsbooks might rule that you cannot place a wager on something with odds shorter than -200, etc. You must be on the lookout for these terms and conditions with whichever sportsbook you choose to play on!

Deposit Match

A deposit match is another common promotional giveaway and is even more enticing than a bonus-back bet.

Just like the bonus-back bet, a deposit match is exactly what it sounds like. When a sportsbook offers a deposit match, they will match your initial deposit up to a certain amount of money in bonus bets.

So, the deposit match is even more alluring than a bonus-back bet because you will receive your bonus bet no matter what the outcome is of your first wager.

With a deposit match, you are essentially starting in a bankroll that is twice your initial deposit, where you can risk the first half of your bankroll without the fear of losing any real money.

An important thing to consider when you join a sportsbook that is offering a deposit match is the playthrough requirements. Usually, sportsbooks will require that you play through your deposit match and your initial deposit before you are allowed to withdraw any of your winnings.

Bonus Bet

And now, to the most critical feature of promotional welcome offers: bonus bets.

Bonus bets are the most straightforward giveaway for new and existing customers at sportsbooks. Bonus bets act as bonus credit to use on your wagers.

For example, you are gifted a $5 bonus bet from your sportsbook. You can place this $5 on any wager you’d like. Let’s say you place it on a bet with +100 odds. If you lose, you do not lose any real money – just the bonus bet. If you win, you receive $5 in real money. You would receive $10 if you wagered $5 of your money, but you only receive the potential payout for bonus bets.

New York Professional Teams

New York Mets

The New York Mets have been a pleasant surprise at the start of the 2023 MLB season. Although the Mets have spent big in previous years, they haven’t met the lofty expectations. But thanks to new owner “Uncle Steve” Cohen, the Mets seem to be piecing things together.

Even without superstar aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer for significant portions of the beginning part of the season, the Mets have found themselves vying for the best record in the NL with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.

Time will tell if these Mets prove to be like Mets teams of the past that were prone to collapsing down the stretch. But this team feels different.

New York Yankees

The Bronx Bombers are off to one of their hottest starts in franchise history. After what seemed like a quiet offseason for a franchise that likes to spend more than anyone, the little moves such as retaining “Nasty Nestor” Cortes and bringing along Clay Holmes have paid exorbitant dividends.

The Yankees are aiming for their first World Series appearance since they won against the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009. As it stands, the Pinstripes are the odds-on favorite to hoist the World Series trophy in October.

New York Giants

The New York Giants have been going through it.

Since the Giants won their Super Bowl in 2012, New York has the fourth-worst win percentage in the NFL. The G-Men are in the cellar of the NFL, but the new regime will try to dig them out.

Owner John Mara went up the state to sign Joe Schoen from the Buffalo Bills and make him his general manager. Schoen sought out one of his own and tabbed Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as the new Giants head coach. The new regime has rightfully garnered plenty of support from the fanbase. The Giants held two top seven picks in the 2023 NFL draft and landed Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal. Many draft pundits viewed the prospects as potential candidates to land as the first overall pick throughout the fall season.

In one of Schoen’s first big moves, he elected to decline quarterback Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option. We will see if Jones can step up and prove he should be a starter in the NFL, but regardless of how he plays, it seems like the transition is heading in a good direction.

Buffalo Bills

The best team in the Empire State belongs to the team in upstate New York.

The Buffalo Bills march into the 2023-23 NFL season as the odds-on favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at most sportsbooks.

Despite the departure of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, the Bills will return most of the personnel that nearly landed them in the AFC title game for the second consecutive year. Quarterback Josh Allen has established himself as one of the league’s prolific signal callers as he is the favorite to win the 2023 NFL MVP.

The Bills left last year with a sour taste in their mouths when they lost the overtime thriller to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round.

New York Jets

The New York Jets are approaching this year with the longest active playoff drought in the NFL. The Jets have missed the postseason for 11 consecutive seasons. The next highest team is at six.

Ever since the Jets made two consecutive AFC championship games behind a stellar defense and run game under colorful head coach Rex Ryan, the Jets have picked the top 10 in seven of the last ten seasons.

However, the new regime of GM Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Salah have created quite a buzz. The Jets were riddled with many injuries last year, but despite this, they showed signs of life down the stretch.

With four picks in the top 36, including three first-round picks, the Jets added an ample amount of young talent to get excited about. All eyes will be on 2021 2nd overall selection Zach Wilson who needs to make a big leap this season if the Jets want to break their playoff drought.

New York Rangers

The Rangers are coming off an exciting season where they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. It was the first time the Rangers went to the NHL’s final four in seven years, but they again fell to the team that defeated them in 2015: the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Although the Rangers disappointingly ended their season losing four straight to the Bolts, the Ranger fan base should have plenty of excitement for the future led by superstars Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox and Chris Kreider. Additionally, the Rangers may possess as much young talent as anyone in all of hockey with players like K’Andre Miller, Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko. But none may be more valuable than goalie Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin was spectacular in his second season as the full-time starter as he was able to win the Vezina Trophy.

New York Islanders

The New York Islanders were one of the NHL’s most disappointing teams this past season. Despite making it to the second round and conference finals in each of Barry Trotz’s three seasons in Long Island, executive Lou Lamoriello elected to pull the plug and relieve Trotz of his duties after a lackluster season.

In a surprising move, Lamoriello named Trotz’s longtime assistant Lane Lambert the new head coach of the Islanders just one week after the firing.

The Islanders still possess a promising core of Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson. The Islanders will look to get to their winning ways for this upcoming season.

New York Knicks

Like New York’s football teams, the New York Knicks have been one of the more underwhelming franchises in their sport in the last few decades. However, they haven’t had any postseason success to mask their downfall.

After a promising first year under coach Tom Thibodeau where he landed the Knicks in the postseason for the first time since 2012-13 and won the Coach of the Year honors, the Knicks regressed to their losing ways as they stumbled to a 37-45 record this past year.

The Knicks have been at the forefront of potentially attaining a big-time, marquee name the last few offseasons but have fallen short. Players such as Kyrie Irving and Bradley Beal may be available this upcoming offseason.

Brooklyn Nets

When the Nets signed Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in the 2019 offseason, Brooklyn had their eyes on a title. But since their big-time acquisitions, the Nets have not been able to get past the second round of the eastern conference.

And it appears the Nets may be headed for divorce this very offseason. NBA reports have indicated that Kyrie Irving’s days in Brooklyn may be numbered. By the start of the 2023-23 NBA season, the Nets roster may look completely different.

New York City FC

New York City FC is the most recent champion in the Empire state.

The expansion team from 2015 has had a fair amount of success since joining the MLS in 2015, but they were never able to quite break through. Until last year.

In 2021, New York City FC topped the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup to win their first-ever title.

Tribal Licenses

There are eight federally recognized tribes in the state of New York:

  • Cayuga Nation of Indians
  • Oneida Indian Nation of New York
  • Onondaga Indian Nation
  • St. Regis Mohawk Tribe
  • Seneca Nation of Indians
  • Shinnecock Tribe
  • Tonawanda Band of Seneca
  • Tuscarora Nation

However, only three of these tribes have legal gaming: the Seneca Nation of Indians, the St. Regis Mohawks and the Oneida Indian Nation of New York.

The Seneca Nation of Indians Class III Seneca Niagara Casino

Class III Seneca Buffalo Casino
Class II Bingo Cattaraugus Reservation
St. Regis Mohawks Class II Mohawk Bingo Palace
Class III Akwesasne Mohawk Casino
Oneida Indian Nation of New York Class III Turning Stone Casino, which houses both Class II Bingo and Poker

Banking Options

Whichever sportsbook you choose to play in New York, the majority of online sportsbooks will have most, or even all, of the following deposit and withdrawal options at your disposal:

  • AHC eCheck
  • Bank wire transfer
  • Cash at the casino cage
  • Online banking
  • PayNearMe
  • PayPal
  • Play+ prepaid card
  • Skrill
  • Visa/Mastercard

Geolocation

Regular sports bettors may be familiar with the term “geolocation”, but what does it mean?

Online sportsbooks will use geolocation software to ensure their customers are within the parameters of their state borders to play. That’s it.

Therefore, online sports bettors will not be able to access a sportsbook using a VPN. In addition, geolocation software can easily confuse your location if you are within a few miles of a state border. Even if you are close to the border of a legal state, the software will lag. Why is that? Let’s say, for example, you are within a mile of Pennsylvania but still in New York. Depending on the sportsbook, the markets that the state of New York presents versus Pennsylvania could be different. That is why it is crucial you are a few miles away from your state border, and you should not experience any issues with your geolocation software.

Neighboring States

Since New York’s legalization, the volume of online sports betting has been staggering. Not only have residents bet their fair share on sports, but so have plenty of tourists passing by the Empire state.

For New York residents traveling around the northeast, here are where neighboring states currently stand on the legalization of online sports betting.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania was one of the first states to legalize online sports betting after the collapse of PASPA.

Pennsylvania has had online legal sports betting since May of 2019 and has proven to be one of the country’s more popular sports betting markets. For any New Yorkers passing by into Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or anywhere in between, you have nothing to sweat as Pennsylvania has legalized online sports betting.

New Jersey

New Jersey was one of the states that led the charge to overturn PASPA in 2018 and, in turn, legalized it the same year it was overruled.

While Nevada is the mecca of sports betting, one could argue New Jersey was the mecca of online sports betting. However, as more states like New York legalize and the industry becomes more saturated, New Jersey isn’t on top of the online sports betting world; it is still one of the prominent markets.

Ohio

Despite many midwestern states legalizing sports betting, Ohio has been on the backburner when providing any legislation for online sports betting.

The state of Ohio expressed interest in legalizing after the collapse of PASPA, but a bill was never passed. Not until June 2021 when SB 176 was signed in the Senate and passed to the House. As of January 2024, the state of Ohio will officially launch online sports betting.

Ohio should prove to be a very competitive market as one of the more hardcore football fanbases in the entire country.

Connecticut

Connecticut launched online sports betting in October of 2021.

Even though Connecticut isn’t as big or populated as some of the states mentioned above, the Constitution state has been a famous one for sports betting.

Before New York’s legalization, many residents crossed state borders to place their bets in Connecticut.

Vermont

To the northeast of New York is Vermont, home of the Catamounts.

There is currently no sports betting bill in place in Vermont, and it doesn’t appear one will materialize in the near future.

Massachusetts

Right below Vermont, you’ll find Massachusetts, where also does not yet have legalized sports betting.

However, Massachusetts has made considerable progress toward potentially legalizing it. Massachusetts lawmakers are currently sorting out the potentiality to legalize sports betting as soon as 2023 with Governor Charlie Baker’s support. Time will tell if these bills can turn into law.

Revenue from Online Sports Betting

One of the huge pluses of legalizing sports betting has been the taxes these states have raked in.

For the state of New York, this isn’t any different. New York legalized online sports betting in January 2023, opening up the biggest sports betting market in the United States. Since their legalization, the state of New York has exploded.

Despite legalizing four years after the overturning of PASPA, New York is quickly approaching one of the country’s most all-time sports betting markets:
